Beauty & Splendor

The Caribs (Kalinago, as they call themselves) were the first to settle the island. They form a very small part of Dominican society, and are part of the remaining few of Caribs Amerindians in the region. They named the island Waitukubuli, meaning "tall or old is her body". Dominica's mountains soar to nearly 5,000 feet, their slopes thickly forested and beautifully crowned with rain forest and elfin woodland. Deep valleys slice through these high mountains--scores of rivers flows through them. Dominica is a defacto land of mountain and forest, lush tropical landscape, rich bird and animal life; there are 162 recorded bird species in these mountains, including the endangered Imperial and Red-Necked parrots. The Mountains are volcanic and produce bubbling hot springs, (and a large boiling lake) as well as cool rivers and high waterfalls. Hotels tend to be small but attractive, some of them are nestled on the mountains-overlooking the beautiful terrain. One enterprising hotelier has harnesses his local hot spring and made natural Jacuzzis by diverting the hot spring through the hotel.
Dominica also boast to be one of the best destination for diving and marine enthusiasts. For the past four years, Dominica has experienced a great growth in marine tourism-the offshore diving in Dominica is among the best in the Caribbean, unfortunately, the island is virtually unknown as a dive destination. Yet still thats the way we 'seem' like it--off the beaten track of tourism. 'Mai, c'est l'vie, Dominique still douce'.
